Welcome to the website for the Town of Litchfield, Maine.  Litchfield is located 16 miles southwest of Augusta in southern Kennebec County.  The current estimate of population (in 2010) is 3,624.

Early settlement of the town began before the Revolutionary War and occurred around the ponds, lakes, and streams.  In 1793, the Town was organized as a political entity as Smithfield Plantation.  In 1795, the Plantation successfully petitioned the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and became incorporated as the Town of Litchfield.
