Welcome to the website for the Town of Litchfield, Maine. Litchfield is located 16 miles southwest of Augusta in southern Kennebec County. The current estimate of population (in 2010) is 3,624.
Early settlement of the town began before the Revolutionary War and occurred around the ponds, lakes, and streams. In 1793, the Town was organized as a political entity as Smithfield Plantation. In 1795, the Plantation successfully petitioned the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and became incorporated as the Town of Litchfield.

Special Lunts Hill Road Bridge Work Notice
There will be traffic stops in both directions in Litchfield at Mile 99 (Lunts Hill Road Bridge) on the Turnpike for structural steel placement under the bridge beginning Monday evening, August 3. Stoppages are scheduled to occur for two nights: Monday, August 3; and Tuesday, August 4; with Wednesday, August 5, as a rain date. A series of up to 25-minutes stoppages will occur each night between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. the following morning. All work is weather dependent.

Road and Bridge Information:
Road Postings: No Litchfield roads are posted at this time.
Road Work: The Rt. 126 “Roundabout” is now in use. Remember…vehicles in the circle have the right of way.
Bridge Work: Lunts Hill Road Bridge – The bridge is closed at this time. FMI: Access the Road Commissioner page (Road Commissioner), and use the link (Lunts Hill Road Bridge) under the Maine Turnpike Authority Project Notices heading to access progress updates.
Bridge Work: Wharf Bridge – The bridge spanning Cobbossee Stream where Stevenstown RD crosses the stream, will be closed Wed., July 15, at 6:30 a.m. for necessary repairs. The closure is expected to last for 3 weeks. Traffic will be detoured onto local roads.
