Annual Report 2007

This year the Smithfield Plantation Trustees were pleased to report that with the help of many volunteers the amphitheater was refurbished and new picnic tables built.  This year as part of our on-going efforts to encourage the schools, scouts and other groups to enjoy the area, we have also added trail facilities.

Smithfield Plantation Trustees were awarded $2500 from Exxon Mobile Pipeline.  The funds contributed to the construction of a Trail Facility (privy) and a new kiosk at the trailhead.  Volunteers, Carol and David Smith, Terry and Tim Tracy, Jeff Lerch, Evan Bither, David Larrabee and Wayne Hull put the facility together at an approved location in November.  The facility was painted and finishing touches applied this spring.

The Trails Committee has been active in keeping the trail open for walkers, snowshoers, and skiers all year long, including right after our recent ice storm.  Thanks to Terry Tracy a moonlight snowshoe walk and an evening vernal pool walk for all ages were a great success.

In February Greg Drummond, Maine Guide and owner of Claybrook Mountain Lodge did a "Wildlife Tracking" workshop for the 3rd and 7th grades in Litchfield.  Greg was assisted by Tamara Whitmore from Friends of Cobbossee Watershed.  Tamara also conducted a "Vernal Pool" workshop for 3rd graders in May.  Thanks to both of them for their depth of knowledge and enthusiasm.

With the support of the school, volunteers, and local businesses, the second annual "Forestry Day" was held at Smithfield Plantation this May.  This time 8th graders participated in 5 learning tracks provided by guest speakers: Forrest Products, Outdoor Survival, Wildlife Habitat, Vernal Pools, and tree Growth and Measurement.

Future plans include creating a new path to the amphitheater area for bringing lunches and workshop materials in and out as well as providing handicapped access.  Another potential project is to adopt a forestry plan which would encourage more wildlife and provide a "model forest" for students to study.

The public is welcome anytime.  Come take a walk at Smithfield Plantation (on Libby Road) and enjoy the quiet and the beauty.
