The Litchfield Senior Center is located in the Academy Building next to the Libby Tozier Elementary School. It is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM with special events in between. The Center opened on October 15, 2004 by the Senior Advisory Committee, a group of 8 that was appointed by the Board of Selectmen on July 1, 2004.
A Director is appointed by the Selectmen to oversee the running of the Center since the loss of our Director, Carol Bailey, in March, 2010. She will be missed by all. Some of the members of the Committee and several area residents volunteer to help with the Center.
Many activities are offered i.e.: exercise programs (both indoors and outdoors); line dancing; crafts; speakers; games (cribbage, scrabble, cards, etc): puzzles, book club, computer classes, movies, candlepin bowling once a month and celebrate monthly birthdays at the Potluck lunch.
A favorite activity is our Roadrunner trips to various areas such as: flower shows, museums, historical sites, fairs, boat trips, etc. We meet in February to select the Roadrunner trips by popular vote.
During the winter months our different themes and holidays draw many people. During the summer we have a senior picnic which is enjoyed by many residents.
Past events have included a luau; costume Hallowell parties, baby picture contest, original hat design, Columbus Day Italian dinner, Mardi gras, Christmas parties, St. Patrick’s Day and others.
The Center has sponsored the AARP safe-driving 2 day course, and the Matter of Balance 6 week course.
The “Litchfield Senior Steppers”, our dedicated line dancers perform at nursing and assisted living homes for the enjoyment of their residents, the local community variety shows held at the Litchfield and Wales Schools, and were interviewed and performed on the “Mature Lifestyle” hosted by Libby Mitchell and shown on Channel 9, the Litchfield Community Day at the Fairgrounds.
Stop by the Center and see what a wonderful meeting place Litchfield has to offer our Seniors – pick up a monthly calendar and Roadrunner Schedule at the Town Office and of course at the Center. The monthly listing of events is also posted on the Bulletin Board at the Post Office and in the Town Sodalite. The Kennebec Journal lists the daily schedule on their Community Page under the heading of Litchfield.
You can now get our calendar and roadrunner trip schedule on the Town Web Page (Litchfield-Maine.org). If we need to make any changes in our scheduling you will be able to find them on the web page (calendar).
A gathering place to make new friends; see old friends……no dues, no fees.
Notice: Cancellation due to the weather or other circumstances, please check Channels 6, 8 and 13. If the RSU4 schools are closed the center will be also!
